What Traditional Publishers Actually Require

Traditional publishers (Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette) have strict submission requirements. We prepare your manuscript to meet every one of them.

Standard Manuscript Format (SMF)

Times New Roman 12pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, page numbers top-right, author name/title/page in header. Chapter titles centred 1/3 down the page.

Word Count Requirements by Genre

Adult fiction: 80,000–100,000. Mystery/Thriller: 70,000–90,000. Fantasy: 90,000–120,000. Children's Picture Book: 500–1,000. Middle Grade: 20,000–50,000. YA: 60,000–90,000.

Query Letter & Synopsis

Query letter: one page max, opening hook, book pitch, brief synopsis, word count, genre, your credentials. Synopsis: one to two pages, present tense, tells the ENTIRE story including the ending.

Rights & Contract Expectations

Standard advance: $5,000–$25,000 for debut authors. Royalties: 10–12.5% hardcover, 7.5–10% paperback, 25% ebook. Publishers typically take world rights for 7–10 years.
